Lego Ninjago Fire Temple – Review (Set 2507)

Lego Ninjago Fire Temple 2507 BoxThe Lego Ninjago Fire Temple is the largest of the Ninjago sets so far and is an impressive set both visually for a display piece and also as a play experience for kids.

BTW- If you don’t know anything about Ninjago, check out our guide How to Play Lego Ninjago– don’t worry!

The game itself is pretty easy and fun but you don’t even need to play the games to build or enjoy the sets. My son never really got into playing the games but loves the sets and minifigures on their own :0)

The Lego Ninjago Fire Temple set includes four Ninja minifigures, three “bad guy” figures, a large temple that splits in two to reveal a fire dragon and comes with numerous accessories including weapons and assorted trees and bridges to set the scene.

Lego Ninjago Fire Temple

Lego Ninjago KaiLego Ninjago Fire Temple : A Little Background

The Ninjago theme is a Lego theme introduced in 2011 with much fanfare.

The theme is based around the Ninja inspired fictional martial art of Spinjitzu. The practice involves two opponents spinning around fast and trying to disarm the other. It is a fairly simple concept but can be made more involved with the introduction of Battle Cards. For more information check out our guide: How to play Lego Ninjago.

It is important to note that the sets themselves can be enjoyed without the game aspect.

If your child isn’t interested in the game, simply discard the battle cards that come with the sets. Then the Ninjago characters can be played with like regular Lego sets,  in a Japanese inspired Ninja environment.

The theme and particularly this set, remind me of the Adventurer’s theme from 2003, particularly the Orient Expedition set, Dragon Fortress. This theme also had a play system based on cards, but no spinners. The theme was fairly successful and introduced a more global feel to the world of Lego.

This is also a strength of the Ninjago sets-their “Non-European” origins.

The theme introduces some wonderful new pieces that kids can use to create their own buildings, vehicles and creatures later on.

It is wonderful too that Lego has seen fit to produce many (but not all) of the specialized pieces with “Oriental” looking motifs not as stickers but fully printed pieces which will last longer.

Lego Ninjago Fire Temple : A Closer Look

Lego Ninjago Fire Temple 2507 Temple Opening

At first glance (and even second, third and fourth glances) this is a great looking set!

It comes with a big colorful temple full of Japanese-style character and ninja-stylings, a very cool looking dragon and a good mix of figures; two ninjas (one white, one red), a ninja master and a lady who looks like she can hold her own as well as three bad guys including the elusive head bad guy, Lord Garmadon.

We loved this set and can see it becoming very popular down the track.

The Fire Temple

The two storey fire temple is full of detail and includes some beautiful printed parts for the doors/screens on both levels. Green dragon statues guard the entrance  and Lego has managed to make a beautiful display piece with a relatively small amount of pieces.

Lego Ninjago Fire Temple 2507 Rear ViewThe one thing to note is that there are no sides to the temple, like many modern Lego playsets, there is only the front and back. The front for display and the back reveals the play features behind.

The temple itself measures over 10” (25cm) wide and 11” (27cm) tall so it is large enough to allow some creative play and as will all lego sets, kids can use the model as a basis to build their own, larger temple if they want.

The main play feature of the temple is that it splits in two to revel the existence of the fire dragon who guards the dragon sword of fire, a legendary weapon apparently the ultimate prize of Spinjitsu warriors and high on the list of Lord Garmadon’s “Things to Steal Today”.

The Fire Dragon

Lego Ninjago Fire Temple 2507 Dragon HeadThe Fire Dragon is very cool.

I have to confess I love the Ninjago dragons and the fact that the characters tame and ride these magnificent beasts just adds to their coolness. Its like a dream mix of Kung-Fu-Panda and How To Train Your Dragon (remember you heard it here first) with a bit of Ninja awesomeness to finish it off.

The way that the dragon comes out from the temple is also quite inspired but limits the play area. For me I would only use this feature now and then, choosing to house the dragon elsewhere and only bringing him to the temple on special occasions, like when Lord Garmadon arrives to check out a certain legendary sword.

The dragon can spit out balls of fire from his mouth as well which is a nice play feature but might want to be monitored if you have young children around :0)

Sensei Wu Black Robes

The Minifigures

As mentioned earlier, the set includes a great mix of minifigures.

Exclusives to the set include Sensei Wu in black robes and also the Fire Dragon Sword which is a very impressive looking golden weapon.

The minifigures are:

  • Nya: Kai’s Sister, Nya has special psychic powers.
  • Sensei Wu – Spinjitsu master in special black robes
  • Ninja Zane – Ice Ninjago
  • Ninja Kai – Fire Ninjago
  • Lord Garmadon – Major Bad Guy
  • Samukai – Underling
  • Kruncha – Under-underling

Out of the box the mix of figures allow kids to play straight away and start making their own stories.

Lego Ninjago Fire Temple: Review
